Artistic Painting (acrylic on stretched linen 58"X26")
Artist: John Potter

A Painting Born from a Mural Proposal
Siren began as a proposal for a large scale public mural. That project did not move forward, but the core idea stayed with me. I brought it back to the studio and let it grow without the constraints of a commercial commission. The limited color palette and the halftone scale from the original proposal were preserved. Everything else was reimagined with greater focus and complexity. What emerged is a painting that could only have been made on my own terms.
One Image, Many Readings
This painting belongs to my ongoing series exploring linear halftones. Structured line systems generate tone, depth, and graphic rhythm. Here the technique is pushed toward visual metamorphosis. The eye moves from a field of blue hexagonal pattern into a linear structure that resolves into a portrait. Light is implied from the left, giving the hexagons a subtle sense of volume. The halftone pattern is scaled to hold equal weight with the figure. Balance and tension coexist. The viewer can read the work as abstract pattern, serene portrait, or implied three dimensional form. Sometimes all three at once.
Process Before Paint
Significant time was invested in drawing, concept development, and digital refinement before the first brush touched the linen canvas. The transition between pattern and portrait had to function perfectly in monochrome before color was considered. Physical painting took about two weeks of active work with additional drying time between layers. The entire process from initial concept to final stroke spanned roughly six weeks beginning in early March 2024.
Materials and Dimensions
The painting is acrylic on stretched linen and measures fifty eight inches wide by twenty six inches tall. Professional grade acrylics were selected for their precision and versatility. They handle smooth color fields and intricate linear details with equal reliability. The linen substrate provides an archival surface appropriate for long term collection.
What This Painting Offers
Siren appeals to collectors drawn to mythological themes, contemporary graphic techniques, and work that reveals itself slowly. The image is dreamlike and immersive. Layered quality invites prolonged looking. This painting represents a genuine synthesis of graphic design principles and fine art practice. It would serve as a sophisticated focal point in a modern interior, holding attention without demanding it.
