This is a nearly full figure portrait in oils. The painting has a classical feel, executed in an academic style. I worked dark to light over a burnt umber underpainting, a traditional method that gives the flesh tones warmth and depth.
The underpainting establishes the overall composition and values first. From there I built up lighter passages gradually, letting the darker layers show through in shadows and transitions. This approach creates a richness you cannot get from painting directly onto a white surface.
