Portrait of a young lady
30"X40" Acrylic on Canvas

Artist: John Potter
I painted this piece as an exercise in figure drawing and painting. It is acrylic on stretched canvas, 30 by 40 inches. The subject is a woman in business attire reclining on a surface that could be a desk or a conference table. The painting has a strong 1980s feel, even though I painted it much later. Bright colors and bold geometry carry that decade's fashion and art influence throughout the composition.
I worked without a model for this one. It was purely an exercise, a way to keep my observational skills and painting technique sharp. You can see the same traditional painting skills at work in my other paintings and murals. I still attend figure drawing workshops regularly to maintain those abilities. No shortcut replaces drawing from a live model.
The composition walks a line between traditional painting and graphic design. The figure is rendered in a straightforward way, but the surrounding shapes and colors push toward something more stylized. That mix interests me, and it shows up in other work too.
If you need a painter for fine art or illustration work, contact me to discuss your project. I am comfortable with both traditional and graphic approaches and enjoy figuring out what each piece needs.
