Work for The Wild Animal Sanctuary
About The Wild Animal Sanctuary
The Wild Animal Sanctuary, located in Keenesburg, Colorado, is a highly respected nonprofit organization devoted to rescuing animals from abusive and neglectful captive situations. They provide lifelong care within expansive, natural habitats where animals can roam freely and live alongside others of their own species. Their work plays an important role in animal welfare, conservation, and public education. For visitors, the sanctuary offers an experience that is both informative and deeply meaningful.
My Work for the Sanctuary
I created multiple illustrated maps for The Wild Animal Sanctuary to support guest orientation and enhance the overall visitor experience. These maps are used on site to help people navigate the property and as part of the sanctuary's online marketing to communicate the scale, layout, and mission of the place. Contributing to projects that support such impactful work has been especially rewarding. Knowing the maps continue to serve as valuable tools for both education and outreach makes the work worth doing.
The Primary Venue Map
The main map I created for the sanctuary is a hybrid piece. It combines a three dimensional model with vector based spot illustration in a single illustrated map. The challenge was this. I needed to show the venue and facilities at an accurate scale while also indicating where different animals could be found. At the scale required for the overall property, the animals themselves would have been far too small to identify. I solved the problem by rendering the landscape and buildings from a three dimensional model, then placing vector based illustrated animals on top at a completely unrealistic scale. The result is an accurate yet fun map that covers a very large area without losing the sense of who lives where. Every subsequent map I made for the sanctuary was built from the same three dimensional model, which ensured visual continuity across the whole set.
