I'm John Potter, the artist and designer behind Escape Key Graphics. I help event organizers, resorts, marinas, publishers, municipalities, and organizations of all kinds turn complex ideas into clear, beautiful visual stories. Whether that's an illustrated map people actually enjoy using, a book cover that sells itself, or a mural that becomes a landmark, the goal is the same.
I work from a studio in South Florida, and my practice covers three connected areas: illustrated maps, custom illustration, and original fine art. To me, these aren't separate jobs. The same rules of composition and storytelling that make a painting work are what make a marina map useful, a technical diagram clear, or a book cover memorable. Each discipline makes me better at the others.
A Specialty I Built, Not Inherited
My career hasn't been a straight line. It's had major highs and low points, and that mix shaped me. I grew up in a rural area with humble beginnings. I had no direction until a high school art teacher saw potential in me that no one else did. She helped me get a scholarship to a small college that eventually led me to Ringling College of Art.
How The Map Thing Started
Looking back, I remember being in art school and searching the library for artists who were known for specialties. I found Brad Holland in editorial illustration and Gary Kelley doing historical work, for instance, but no one specializing in maps. That stuck with me. Years later I recalled this and decided to try to fill that gap. I knew of no one making illustrated maps as a specialty, and there certainly wasn't anyone making boat show maps. So I created a small niche industry. My tiny claim to fame.
After college, I worked full time for the State of Florida at the University of Florida in Gainesville. I moved on to a prop and scenic company, then relocated to South Florida to work in silk screen printing. When the 90s hit, I got computer savvy and jumped into the computer game industry. After that, I worked as Art Director for BUC International on the first boat multiple listing service on the web. I continued in the marine market as a full-time designer for The Catamaran Company.
When that company downsized, I decided to go out on my own. I had created Escape Key Graphics years earlier, but now I got serious about it. I approached Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida with an idea and a proposal. They said yes, and a new line of work was born. Shortly after, Show Management (now Informa Markets) asked me to make a map for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on a very tight deadline. Those two projects put Escape Key Graphics on the map, so to speak.
I saw a gap in the market for maps that were both functional and beautiful, so I built a specialty that didn't exist before. Illustrated maps have become a big part of what I do, but they aren't the whole picture. I also produce fine art, custom illustrations, and murals. Whether it's a boat show map, a book cover for an independent press, or a permanent installation for a city, the goal is always the same: clear visual storytelling with craftsmanship at the core.
What I Do
Illustrated Maps. My signature specialty. Custom maps for boat shows, resorts, marinas, real estate, transportation, towns, parks, and wayfinding. Clients include the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the San Diego International Boat Show, the Windy City Boat & Yacht Show, the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, and Holy Loch Marina in Scotland.
Custom Illustration. Institutional and marketing illustration, editorial and cover artwork, technical illustration, and product-focused visuals. I've created book covers for Matanzas Press, Shorebird Books, and Old Growth Books; a full illustration series for Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club; and permanent illustrated installations for the City of Pembroke Pines.
Fine Art & Murals. Original paintings, drawings, and large-scale mural work, including my Custom Halftone Series.
Graphic Design & Motion. Branding, logo design, poster design, vehicle wraps, proposal renderings, and animated illustrations.
One Style Is Never Enough
Flexibility is central to my approach. Some assignments demand precision and clean accuracy, so for those I work digitally using SketchUp Pro and Adobe Illustrator. Other projects benefit from a warmer, more expressive feel, so for those I create handmade artwork using traditional drawing and painting techniques.
Having both capabilities means I can match the visual language directly to the context and audience of each assignment. Branding objectives and practical needs aren't opposing forces. They inform each other.
Global Projects, Lasting Impressions
My career has taken me from the Florida coast to the Caribbean and the UK, working with a diverse range of clients across publishing, hospitality, education, local government, and event production. This variety isn't happenstance. I'm genuinely interested in tackling different problems and communicating with different audiences. The common thread is a commitment to craftsmanship and clear storytelling.

How I Work With You
Every project begins with one thing: understanding what you actually need. Not just what you think you want, but what will solve your problem and serve your audience. From there, I consider the options and recommend the right direction.
Most of my clients hire me because they want a creative partner who can take the lead, not someone who hands them a menu and waits. They have enough decisions to make already. My job is to make this one easier.
That means the final product has to exceed expectations every time, because there's no one else to blame if it doesn't. I take that responsibility seriously.
