Illustrated Maps, Fine Art, and Illustration
I'm John Potter, the artist, illustrator, and designer behind Escape Key Graphics, a studio based in South Florida. My work is split between two main pillars: creating detailed, illustrated maps and producing original fine art and illustrations. These aren't separate pursuits; they're two sides of the same practice. The same attention to composition, narrative, and visual clarity that goes into a painting or a book cover is essential for crafting a useful, beautiful marina or resort map. Each discipline informs the other, making the whole stronger.
A Path Forged, Not Followed
My career hasn't been a straight line. It's had high highs and low lows, and that's exactly what shaped me. I came from humble beginnings in a rural part of the country, and honestly, I had no direction until a high school art teacher saw potential in me that no one else did. She helped me get a scholarship and continue into higher learning, eventually leading me to the prestigious Ringling College of Art.
After college, I worked full time for the State of Florida at the University of Florida in Gainesville for a few years. I then worked for a prop and scenic company, moved to South Florida and spent time in silk screen printing industry. When the 90s arrived, I got computer savvy and moved into the computer game industry. After leaving the game industry I worked for BUC International as Art Director working on the first boat multiple listing service on the web, then continued in the marine market as a full time designer for The Catamaran Company.
How The Map Thing Started
Looking back, I remember being in art school and searching the library for artists who were known for specialties. I found Brad Holland in editorial illustration and Gary Kelley doing historical work, for instance, but no one specializing in maps. That stuck with me. Years later I recalled this and decided to try to fill that gap. I knew of no one making illustrated maps as a specialty, and there certainly wasn't anyone making boat show maps. So I created a small niche industry. My tiny claim to fame.
When that company downsized, I decided to try going it on my own. I had created Escape Key Graphics years before, but now I got serious about it. I approached Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida with an idea, part of a map, and a proposal. They said yes, and a new line of work was born. Shortly after, I was contacted by Show Management (now Informa Markets) requesting I make a map for The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest boat show in the world, on a very tight deadline. Those two projects established Escape Key Graphics as a serious business.
While illustrated maps have become a distinguishing part of what I do, they're not the full picture. Because of their relatively unique character, they tend to get a lot of attention, and I'm proud of that. But Escape Key Graphics also produces original fine art, illustrations, and murals. The maps are a specialty, a niche I carved out when no one else was doing it, but the same creative foundation supports everything I make. Whether it's a boat show map or a mural on a wall, the goal is always the same: clear visual storytelling with craftsmanship at the core.
Global Projects, Lasting Impressions
My career has taken me from the Florida coast to the Caribbean and the UK, collaborating with a diverse range of clients. Recent projects include illustrated maps for major events like the San Diego International Boat Show and the Windy City Boat & Yacht Show, as well as custom maps for luxury resorts like the Four Seasons Resort Lanai and marinas like Holy Loch Marina in Scotland. I've also created permanent installations for municipalities and cover art for independent presses. This variety isn't just happenstance; I'm genuinely interested in tackling different problems and communicating with different audiences. The common thread is a commitment to craftsmanship and clear, visual storytelling.

Blending Tradition with New Tools
Every project begins with one thing: understanding what the client actually needs. Not what they think they want, but what will solve their problem and serve their audience. From there, I consider potential solutions and make the call. Most of my clients don't want a menu of options. They want me to pick the right direction and run with it. They're hiring me to relieve them of the burden of decision making, not add to it. That means the final product has to exceed expectations every time, because there's no one else to blame if it doesn't. I take that responsibility seriously. Along the way, I'm always exploring new tools, like AI, to push creative boundaries, but they're just that: tools. The craftsmanship, the attention to detail, and the hand-made quality my clients expect never take a back seat.
