HALFTONES - A Series of Paintings by John Potter:
What Are Halftones?
Halftones are a classic way of building images from tiny dots, lines, or repeating patterns. First used in the 1800s, this method lets black ink show shades of gray. Look close at a newspaper photo. Those little marks trick your eye into seeing smooth tones. That's a halftone.
Most halftones use dots, but many other patterns work too. They used to be made with cameras and chemicals. Now digital tools make them easy to experiment with. Less waste. More room to play.
About This Series
For these nine pieces, I use halftone patterns as a visual language. I mix up the patterns, sizes, and techniques. Sometimes I put them where you wouldn't expect.
You could call these paintings semi-abstract or optical art. That's fair. But by that logic, nearly every printed photo would fit the same label. All images are illusions we build.
We trust our eyes without thinking. But what we see isn't the whole truth. It's just enough to get by.
The Real Goal
I'm not trying to trick you. I want you to question how you see. Our senses give us just enough information to move through the world. Technology shapes the rest. These paintings are a quiet reminder of that.
