Title: "Portrait of Volodymyr Zelenskyy" | A Contemporary Portrait Painting (2023)
About the Work
This portrait, completed in 2023, depicts Volodymyr Zelensky, the sixth president of Ukraine, who was elected in 2019. Created against the backdrop of the ongoing war following Russia’s invasion, the painting is an artistic response to the profound resilience demonstrated by the Ukrainian people.
My intent was to capture the immense weight of responsibility and pressure borne by a leader who, without prior political or military experience, found himself facing historic challenges on both fronts. The portrait seeks to convey a sense of stern resolve tempered by the gravity of circumstance. As history continues to unfold, the context and interpretation of this image may evolve, but its core remains a testament to a specific moment of defining fortitude.
Technique & Composition
This painting holds a significant place as the first work in my series exploring the use of custom linear halftones. These structured black lines form a distinct graphic system that interacts with the more traditional realist elements of the portrait.
The composition is divided into two integrated visual fields. The Ukrainian flag and the defining halftone lines are executed in acrylic resin spray paint, creating a flat, graphic plane with a subtle physical texture. In deliberate contrast, the realistic rendering of the face is achieved through a combination of brushed acrylic and oil paints, allowing for nuanced shading and emotional depth. This juxtaposition of graphic symbolism and intimate portraiture is central to the work's impact.
The initial sketch was developed from a synthesis of several photographic references, crafted to achieve a unique and specific expression that feels both immediate and contemplative.
Viewing Experience
A photograph can document the image, but it cannot fully convey the painting’s physical presence. The textural contrast between the spray painted flag and the finely modeled face, along with the layered application of paint, creates a tangible depth that is essential to the viewing experience. This is a work designed to be encountered in person, where its technical and emotional layers can be fully appreciated.
Collector Considerations
This portrait appeals to collectors interested in contemporary history, political art, and works that capture defining figures of our time. It is a piece for those who value art that engages with current events while employing a sophisticated blend of graphic and traditional fine art techniques.
