Presented as part of the Plunge Into the Arts program at Plunge Beach Resort, Lauderdale by the Sea
Artist: John Potter
Nine original paintings on display in Lauderdale by the Sea as well as work by other artists
This show isn’t until November, but I wanted to give a heads-up for all you long-term planners out there. (I’ll post a reminder closer to the date.) The work will be on view from November 1 through December 4. If you’d like to attend the reception, that will be on November 20. Please see details below.
A quick note for anyone who came to my 2025 Halftones show at Canvas Studios: the nine works I’m showing here are nine pieces from that series. They’ll be appearing in a new group show context, so while the pieces themselves aren’t new, seeing them alongside other artists’ work will offer a fresh experience. I wanted to mention this upfront so returning friends know what to expect. If you missed them last time, here’s your chance to see them.
Come join us for a special evening including nine works by John Potter as well as works by other artists.
Experience the mesmerizing beauty of Potter's unique halftone creations at the reception of this show. HALFTONES - A Series of Paintings by John Potter:
What Are Halftones?
Halftones are a classic way of building images from tiny dots, lines, or repeating patterns. First used in the 1800s, this method lets black ink show shades of gray. Look close at a newspaper photo. Those little marks trick your eye into seeing smooth tones. That's a halftone.
Most halftones use dots, but many other patterns work too. They used to be made with cameras and chemicals. Now digital tools make them easy to experiment with. Less waste. More room to play.
About This Series
For these nine pieces, I use halftone patterns as a visual language. I mix up the patterns, sizes, and techniques. Sometimes I put them where you wouldn't expect.
You could call these paintings semi-abstract or optical art. That's fair. But by that logic, nearly every printed photo would fit the same label. All images are illusions we build.
We trust our eyes without thinking. But what we see isn't the whole truth. It's just enough to get by.
The Real Goal
I'm not trying to trick you. I want you to question how you see. Our senses give us just enough information to move through the world. Technology shapes
