City of Pembroke Pines, Florida Projects

Pembroke Pines sits in southern Broward County, about 22 miles north of Miami. It is a city that has grown quickly over the past few decades while holding onto its own character. The feel is suburban but busy. You may hear Spanish, a reminder that Miami is close, but English works fine for daily life. Many residents commute south for work and come home here for the quieter pace, the good public parks, and the lower crime rates that Broward County is known for.
The Utility Box Project
In 2019, the City of Pembroke Pines approached me about a public art project. They wanted to beautify utility boxes around the city. I ended up creating six pieces, each one interpreting a different part of the community's identity.
- City Center. An interpretive view of the civic campus featuring City Hall and The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery and Exhibit Hall.
- Playground. A vibrant, stylized illustration celebrating the city's recreational spaces and family amenities.
- Soccer. A dynamic composition that honors the community's athletic spirit and sports facilities.
- Perry Airport. An illustration that references local aviation history and the enduring spirit of flight.
- Wetlands. A detailed piece celebrating the natural beauty of South Florida's wetland ecosystems, including the Chapel Trail Nature Preserve.
Florida Savannah Wilderness. An artwork dedicated to the region's distinctive savannah wilderness and the native wildlife it sustains.
Later Work
The city later commissioned a memorial bench in memory of Taylor Bishop, erected at the site of his untimely accident. It was an honor to contribute to something that meant so much to the community.
You can also find six of my illustrations on permanent display inside Pembroke Pines City Hall. They have been there for a while now, and I am always glad to know they are still part of daily life in the city.
