A Challenging Project That Taught Me Valuable Lessons

Every project is a learning opportunity, and this one was no exception. While the collaboration tested my usual workflows, it ultimately helped me grow as a professional and refine how I work with clients.

Aligning Vision With Reality

The client had a strong creative vision, but some elements of the property she wanted to map were not yet built. She also preferred not to send me on site to survey everything myself. I adapted by collaborating with her to build a shared Google My Map, which gave us both a clear reference point for the geography. That step was a breakthrough in getting us on the same page.

Navigating Changing Preferences

We explored several creative directions together. First she wanted an overhead map, then she was inspired by a different map style. I created multiple examples, including a hand illustrated overhead view and a concept that blended illustration with map details. While she did not connect with those attempts, she was passionate about finding the right look. Eventually I asked her to share a simple sketch or a clear reference, and she provided a playful cartoon style overhead map with its own unique proportions.

Finding the Final Direction

She asked for 3D rendered cabins placed onto the map along with a watercolor architectural rendering style. After a few rounds of trial and refinement, we landed on a version that worked for her. I take ownership of a few small oversights along the way, and I also was reminded to recognize when a project needs clearer boundaries. There were multiple revision rounds, but we did reach a completed map that she approved.

What I Learned From This Experience

This project reinforced something I try to build into every collaboration. A clear vision from the start makes all the difference. If a client knows exactly what they want (and can communicate it), I can bring it to life beautifully. If they are open to trusting my expertise without a fixed vision, that also works well. But I cannot guess an unspoken idea any more than you can guess a password you have never been told.

Moving forward, I have committed to checking in early and often. If a project begins to drift too far from its original scope, I will offer an exit strategy so both sides can walk away with respect and no hard feelings. That protects everyone’s time, energy, and dignity.
