About the Work

"Jake" is an original contemporary portrait from my series dedicated to the exploration of custom linear halftones. This technique uses carefully structured line patterns to build form, create tonal variation, and introduce a sense of rhythm within the image. The painting merges this graphic precision with the nuanced observation of traditional portraiture, resulting in a modern visual language that highlights both dimensional form and the subtle interplay of light.

The subject is my son, Jake, based on a photograph I took in early 2022. This painting is a significant milestone, representing the first fully developed linear halftone pattern I successfully translated into a finished work. The halftone design created for this portrait was so integral to its success that it was later adapted for a large scale mural installation in Boca Raton, Florida. Having articulated this image in both an intimate format and a major public work, I consider its conceptual and technical exploration complete. It stands as a definitive and resolved piece within my artistic progression.

Technique & Material

The portrait is executed using professional acrylic resin spray paint on a wood panel. This medium was selected for its capacity to achieve sharp, clean lines and smooth, even layers, which are essential for maintaining the integrity of the intricate halftone structure. The spray paint application allows for a flawless, flat finish that emphasizes the graphic quality of the work while preserving the human warmth of the subject.
