Graphite Sketch - Illustration of a relaxed lady

Illustrator: John Potter - Escape Key Graphics

Sketch of a girl sitting in a chair
This drawing began as a concept sketch centered on the idea of enjoying the simplicity of doing nothing. Executed in graphite on paper, the piece depicts a woman relaxing in a large, well worn easy chair with a glass of wine held loosely in her hand. The pose and setting emphasize comfort and ease.

The figure was drawn without a model or photographic reference. I wanted the subject to feel contemporary and believable, as if she could be someone you might know rather than an idealized character. Her features were intentionally kept racially ambiguous, and her clothing reflects everyday comfort, including sweatpants, a tank top, hair pulled back with a band, and soft slippers. The oversized chair, with its slightly secondhand character, reinforces the sense of casual familiarity. The wine glass tilts just enough to suggest how deeply relaxed she has become, adding a subtle point of tension within an otherwise calm scene.

Although the drawing is simple in execution, it captures a moment of quiet, unguarded ease. This sketch later served as the foundation for a completed halftone painting, extending the original idea into a more developed final work.
