Painting of Sushi
44"X34" acrylic on canvas - In a private collection

This painting always draws attention when I show it publicly. I have always thought of it as a floral painting that happens to be of food rather than flowers. The composition, the color, the way the pieces arrange themselves on the plate. It has the same qualities I would look for in a still life of peonies or roses.
I tend to use big brush strokes and bright colors in most of my work. Here I pushed both further than usual. I also experimented with heavy mediums to thicken the paint and create translucent glazes. The surface has real texture. You can see the brush moving through the paint.
I painted this on a whim. I had sushi delivered to my home and the presentation was so striking that I photographed it right there at the table. That photo became the source material for this painting. Forty four inches wide, thirty four inches tall, acrylic on canvas.
If you are interested in culinary art or illustration for a restaurant, a publication, or a private collection, let me know. I enjoy work that asks for color and appetite in equal measure.
