Contemporary Style Painting (oils on stretched linen 36"X52")
Artist: John Potter

"Scarlet Macaw" captures the dynamic moment a macaw launches into flight. This original painting is a vibrant exploration within my series focusing on linear halftones, a technique where systematic, custom line work builds form and shadow. The subject’s vivid natural plumage provides a powerful opportunity to contrast this structured, graphic line work against areas of lush, fluid color.
The composition is designed to convey a sense of immediate motion and untamed energy. The macaw is depicted mid-action, wings unfurling, transforming the canvas into a burst of life and color. This choice reflects a deeper interest in themes of freedom, vitality, and the arresting beauty of the natural world, interpreted through a contemporary artistic lens.
While the technique is precise and considered, the overall effect is one of spirited spontaneity. The painting draws upon the visual impact of street art and graphic design, utilizing scale and saturation to create a bold statement. It is intended to be both a celebration of its subject and a stand-alone piece of contemporary art that energizes its environment.
Technique & Material
The artwork is mostly created using acrylic paints and mediums on stretched linen. The distinctive linear details are achieved through a meticulous process, forming the intricate halftones that define the bird’s form primarily using airbrush. These are mirrored by rich, sweeping fields of color that emulate the macaw’s brilliant feathers. Some final details were done using oil based paints.
The entire piece is protected and enhanced with an oil based varnish. This finish intensifies the color depth and creates an even surface. While the image reproduces well, the true impact of the surface and scale is best appreciated in person.
Collector Considerations
"Scarlet Macaw" serves as a commanding focal point for a room. Its combination of natural subject matter and contemporary execution allows it to bridge styles, complementing both contemporary and eclectic interiors. It appeals to collectors drawn to wildlife art, contemporary graphic techniques, and pieces that express a sense of joy and unrestrained energy.

Commission a custom halftone painting
This piece is part of an ongoing series, but I also accept commissions for original work in the same technique. If you have a subject in mind, I would enjoy discussing it with you.
