About the Show
The Newport Beach International Boat Show brings together live entertainment, brand experiences, and a strong lineup of yachts from leading builders and brokerages. The setting is one of Southern California's most desirable coastal locations, so the show reflects the refined lifestyle and waterfront culture Newport Beach is known for. Visitors can explore world class vessels while enjoying a relaxed but upscale marina atmosphere.
This is my fourth year working on this show, and it still feels fresh. The map uses a nearly straight overhead view, which has become a distinguishing characteristic of maps I make for Revel Republic. This was my first west coast boat show map and my first project with Revel Republic.
About the Map
I built the venue as a three dimensional model in SketchUp to get the scale, lighting, and surface detail right. From there, I refined and styled the renderings in Photoshop to sharpen clarity and visual appeal. Final work like map keys and logos are added in Adobe Illustrator. The model now serves as the foundation for each year's map. I can modify it to show specific areas or even render from different angles if needed.
Because the show footprint is compact, we took a different approach to exhibitor listings. Instead of forcing visitors to match numbers, we list exhibitors directly in the legend and cross reference them to clearly named docks. Names are easier to remember than numbers or letters. Key points of interest are labeled on the map, and facilities like restrooms and ticket sales appear as simple icons that anyone can recognize at a glance (although a key is provided).
The result is a map that balances a polished look with real world wayfinding. It helps attendees move through the show comfortably and gives organizers a tool they can rely on.
