Figure Painting (acrylic and spray paint on 16"x16" panel)
Artist, Illustrator: John Potter - Escape Key Graphics
This painting is of a girl relaxing with a glass of wine in a big easy chair.

"Relaxing Girl," completed in 2023, is an original contemporary portrait depicting a woman at ease, enjoying a moment of quiet repose in a spacious armchair. This painting holds a significant place as the second major work in my ongoing series dedicated to the exploration of custom linear halftones. In this series, these structured line patterns are the fundamental building blocks that collectively construct the image’s form and mood.
The composition originated from an earlier life drawing, which captured the natural, relaxed posture of the subject. This initial sketch served as the vital foundation. It was digitally transformed into a precise black and white halftone design, a detailed guide that defines every contour and shadow of the final painted work.
A primary technical objective for this piece was to investigate the expressive potential of contrasting surface textures. The halftone lines that define the figure are rendered with a subtle, velvety matte finish. This stands in deliberate opposition to the deep, reflective gloss of the background. This intentional contrast creates a tangible physical dialogue on the panel, a play of light and texture that photography can not truly replicate. The surface becomes an integral part of the viewing experience, inviting close inspection to appreciate the distinct tactile qualities of each area.

Technique & Material
The painting is executed using professional acrylic resin spray paint, applied with precision to achieve clean, sharp lines and smooth, graduated fields of color. The final stage involves a selective sealing process: the background is coated with a high gloss varnish to intensify its depth and shine, while the figure remains unvarnished, preserving its soft, absorbent matte quality.
Visual Impact & Ambiance
Visually, "Relaxing Girl" achieves a compelling balance. The graphic edge of the halftone technique lends a modern, slightly sharp aesthetic, while the subject’s serene demeanor and palette establish a foundational calm. This duality allows the painting to make a confident statement without being domineering. It possesses a versatile presence, capable of integrating harmoniously into a wide array of interior styles, from contemporary minimalist spaces to more eclectic and personal environments, where it acts as a focal point of cultivated tranquility.
Collector Considerations
This painting appeals to those who appreciate contemporary portraiture, process driven art, and works that reward closer viewing. It is particularly suited for a living room, study, or bedroom, where its theme of relaxation and its sophisticated textural contrast can be fully enjoyed.
