"Thalassophobia," completed in 2024, is a compelling and immersive painting from my series dedicated to the exploration of custom linear halftones. In this work, the structured line systems are pushed to their perceptual limits, creating an optical experience that translates a profound psychological state.
The imagery draws directly from personal experience, informed by travels to locations like the Bahamas for professional work and the visceral sensations of deep water diving. While the initial concept centered on sharks, the artistic focus evolved to capture something more intangible: the overwhelming sensation of vast, immeasurable depth. This is like the moment a diver leaves the boat and descends toward a deep wreck, confronted by the sheer scale and mystery of the open ocean. The title, "Thalassophobia," directly engages the primal fear of deep, dark water, translating that psychological tension into a visual form.
This painting represents a distinct methodological shift within my series. To achieve the required precision for its complex optical effect, the drawing and compositional design were developed almost entirely within a digital environment. This approach allowed for an exactness in alignment and pattern generation that is fundamental to the work's impact, enabling a clarity that would be exceptionally challenging through traditional means alone.
In its final form, the painting aligns closely with the traditions of Op Art, more so than previous works in my portfolio. The concept is elegantly straightforward but was refined through extensive experimentation. The piece possesses a distinctly contemporary gallery presence. It is designed to be viewed from a distance, where the full scope of its spatial illusion can be absorbed. The rhythmic, concentric halftone patterns generate a mesmerizing, almost vibrating field.
When experienced in person, this effect is profound. The pattern pulls the viewer in, creating a vertiginous sense of depth. Within this swirling vortex, the ominous forms of circling sharks emerge and recede, slipping in and out of focus. This visual oscillation mirrors the very feeling of thalassophobia itself, where perception shifts between tangible threat and the infinite unknown.
