Florida Sea Grant Book Cover Illustration
Artist, Illustrator: John Potter - Escape Key Graphics

This illustration is one of my earlier professional works, created during my time as a full time staff member at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) art department. The project was developed for Florida Sea Grant, an organization supported by our department. The subject is marine biotechnology. While the specific publication details have faded from memory after many years, the illustration itself remains vivid and, I believe, one of my strongest pieces from that era. It was created using Adobe Illustrator, almost certainly version one or two, a testament to the durability of well considered vector design.
Design Approach and Composition
The color palette is intentionally limited to soft pastels, creating a calm and sophisticated visual tone. Rather than filling the page, I chose to confine the primary illustration within a unified vertical box surrounded by generous negative space. This decision remains, in my view, some of my most effective use of empty space to focus attention and create breathing room within a composition.
The word "FLORIDA" rises upward, breaking out of the confining box and into the negative space above. The letters themselves carve into the emptiness, allowing the background color to fill the gaps between them and visually opening the composition from within. On the left side, a cell or microscopic organism also breaches the boundary of the box. This subtle break adds a sense of dimension and depth; without this small three dimensional cue, the flat, stylized illustration would risk feeling too flat.
Unified Visual Language
All holding lines throughout the illustration share a consistent, bold point size and are rendered in colors drawn directly from the shapes they outline. This deliberate uniformity creates a cohesive, integrated look and feel across disparate elements. The scientific imagery includes a round bottom flask, a microscope, and a syringe. The ocean themed components feature a stylized sea urchin, a field of sand color, and simplified wave forms.
Below the main composition, the title "Marine Biotechnology" rests within a dark blue field. The letterforms appear in the same sand color used above it, as though they are cutouts revealing the layer beneath. This subtle reversal adds visual interest while reinforcing the unified color story.
Enduring Appeal
Many years later, this illustration remains one of my personal favorites. It represents a moment of achieving what I strive for in much of my work: simplistic elegance. The composition balances restraint with moments of playful breakout, and the Art Deco influenced sensibility gives it a timeless quality that has aged remarkably well.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful illustration can elevate scientific and technical subject matter into something visually compelling and enduring. It also serves as a reminder that the tools matter less than the principles: composition, color, negative space, and a consistent visual language. Whether working in early versions of Illustrator or contemporary digital tools, these fundamentals remain constant.
My professional illustration services include book covers, editorial artwork, and conceptual graphics for institutional and commercial clients. I bring the same attention to compositional structure, color harmony, and cohesive design to every project, regardless of scale or subject matter.
