Basis of This Map

This map, like most of my boat show maps, is built on a digital three dimensional model. I created this particular model back in 2013. It covers this area of downtown West Palm Beach, including the waterfront and the neighboring buildings and streets.

Each year I update the model with the new locations of floating docks and exhibitor spaces. I render it from the desired angle, then retouch and refine in Photoshop. Finally I add the logos, map key, and all other graphics in Adobe Illustrator.

About This Map

SYBAss, which stands for Superyacht Builders Association, wanted to highlight their specific area at the show. Because I already had the updated three dimensional model, I could create a unique map focused just on their section. Having a model to work from means I can change the angle, zoom level, and even the field of view to create a custom view that highlights an area in a way that a standard map cannot.

At the client's request I added a lot more details than I had on the primary show map and it really makes the map pop. This included additional cars and planes on display and of course more boats. Some fencing was also added to give a better feel of the actual show border. I added some landscaping details that weren't requested but felt needed.

For this version I used a standalone rendering engine to get more realistic lighting and material textures. On the larger show map those details would be too small to appreciate. Here they have room to show off.

I should mention that the information used to create these maps comes from the show managers. I only make these maps with the agreement of the show management company, in this case Informa Markets.
