Marketing & Promotional Illustration Portfolio
Illustration and Design by John Potter - Escape Key Graphics
Sometimes a project is less about explaining how something works and more about making people want it. Book covers, magazine illustrations, product packaging, event graphics. These are pieces where the main job is to catch someone's eye and leave a good impression.
I have done plenty of technical and wayfinding work over the years. Maps that help people navigate a boat show or a resort. Diagrams that show how things fit together. But I also take on projects that are purely about promotion and marketing. A cover that makes someone pick up a book. A graphic for a program that sets the tone for an event. Packaging that stands out on a shelf.
The maps I make often serve both purposes at once. They help someone find their way, sure. But they also give that person a picture of where they are going before they even arrive. That is marketing too. It builds anticipation and makes the place feel real before the visitor sets foot on it.
Book Covers and Publications
I have designed and illustrated covers for books, programs and magazines over the years. Each one starts with the same question. What feeling does this need to create? A thriller needs tension. A literary novel might need something quieter. A program for an event needs to capture the spirit of what attendees are about to experience. The illustration sets the expectation and the text fills in the details.
Packaging Design
I have also worked on package design projects. The challenge there is different. You have limited space and you need to communicate fast. Someone walking down an aisle or scrolling through a page makes a quick decision. The design has to work at a glance and still hold up when someone looks closer.
How the Map Work Connects
Even the most wayfinding focused map I make still does marketing work. A resort map showing pools and gardens and restaurants is not just telling people where things are. It is selling them on the idea of being there. A boat show map with illustrated yachts and banners is setting a mood. The visitor is not just navigating. They are being shown what matters and what is worth their time.
If you have a project that needs illustration for marketing or promotional purposes, I would be glad to talk about it. You can contact me through the site and tell me what you are working on.
