WHAT IS ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR?:

Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard for vector illustration. Unlike photographs or scans, which are made of tiny squares called pixels, vector graphics are built from mathematically defined shapes and points. These points, known as Bézier points, control the direction and curvature of every line. The main advantage is that vector images can be scaled to any size without losing any sharpness or resolution. That makes them perfect for everything from a business card to a highway billboard, for print, websites, and large format displays.

My History with the Tool

I have worked with a number of vector programs over the years, including Freehand and CorelDRAW. But Adobe Illustrator has been my primary tool for vector art and graphic design since around 1990. Even when I start a project in other software like SketchUp or Maperitive, those files almost always end up in Illustrator for final refinement and output. All that experience has helped me build a workflow that balances technical precision with artistic expression.

What I Use It For in My Work

Illustrator is especially well suited for the kind of bold, graphic styles I often work in. Art Deco, Italian Futurism, anything that asks for clean lines and flat fields of color. I rely on it heavily for creating axonometric maps and architectural renderings where accuracy is just as important as the visual appeal. It is also my go to tool for logo design, custom typography, and any project that needs to be reproduced at multiple sizes. Most of the work I do in other programs ends up in Illustrator for addition of logos, graphics, text and map keys for instance.

Illustrator gives me the flexibility to handle both highly stylized artistic work and functional, detail driven diagrams.

Beyond Static Images

Vector artwork from Illustrator does not have to stay still. It can be animated and integrated into motion graphics using Adobe After Effects.
