The 2022 season marked the 40th anniversary of the Palm Beach International Boat Show, with Informa commemorating the milestone with a distinctive update to the event logo.
For the illustrated map, a significant change was the show's expansion to include the full extent of Palm Harbor Marina. Because the marina's parking area was already incorporated into the 2021 map frame, there was no need to adjust the zoom level to accommodate the additional dockage. I also modified the lighting within the three dimensional model, setting the virtual sun to an earlier time of day. This created shorter shadows and resulted in an overall brighter, more vibrant appearance for the illustration. The necessary updates to floating dock arrangements and land based displays were executed within the original master digital model I maintain for this venue. This process involves revising the model, rendering new base files, and refining them in Adobe Photoshop to create the final illustrated backdrop.
With the updated illustration complete, I proceeded to the graphic layout in Adobe Illustrator. The established map keying system, using color coded dots and graphical icons, remained unchanged for user familiarity. However, the corresponding text listings for points of interest were updated, and the positions of these markers on the map were adjusted as needed. The positions of the graphical icons for amenities were also updated. A show schedule was integrated into the layout, effectively utilizing available space. I made the decision to remove my personal logo and branding from this year's edition. Sponsor logos, including that of Palm Harbor Marina, were added or repositioned within the design.
The proven design and efficient workflow delivered an effective tool once again, providing returning visitors with a familiar and reliable resource. The map was deployed across multiple channels: in print materials, as onsite signage, and on the official website. Informa leverages these maps as powerful pre event marketing tools. They build anticipation by allowing potential attendees to plan their visit in advance, identifying which docks to explore, where to find food, and how to locate essential facilities. While other promotional assets may rely on past event photography to evoke a feeling, these maps provide a clear, informative, and actionable view of the event to come.
