My professional journey in visual communication began with the fundamentals of page layout, a skill that formed the cornerstone of my early career. I worked extensively on multi page publications, managing complex documents that often spanned hundreds of pages. The advent of desktop publishing was a transformative period that I welcomed, and I continued to specialize in publication layout for several years.
Over time, my focus evolved to encompass a broader range of graphic design disciplines. My work shifted toward advertising layout, logo design, and the composition of covers and informational maps. This path included hands on experience in varied technical processes, from manual color separation and vinyl cutting to operating vinyl printers and sign shop equipment. My proficiency with computers deepened significantly during a period in the computer game industry, where I developed foundational 3D skills and learned to work independently in a PC based environment, which led me to build my own systems. In the mid 1990s, I taught myself HTML and later CSS, leading to over six years of professional web design and development. While I no longer build sites from the ground up, I regularly write and edit HTML and CSS within platforms like WordPress, and I have practical experience working with various content management systems and server side environments.
My full time roles have consistently centered on graphic design and art direction. During my tenure at the University of Florida as a Publications and Production Specialist, my primary duty was the layout of large scale academic publications. My position at BUC International was dedicated almost entirely to web design, under the title of Art Director/Software Engineer. At The Catamaran Company, I served as a Graphic Designer responsible for advertising layout, web design, and trade show graphics for several years.
Today, much of my graphic design work directly supports my illustration projects, creating cohesive visual systems for events and venues. I create clear, functional overhead maps and diagrams. These projects, which prioritize information architecture and clarity, fall distinctly under the umbrella of graphic design, complementing the more illustrative cartography featured elsewhere in my portfolio.
