Project Detail: Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show Map 2013
Client: Burgess Yachts
Custom Map for Burgess Yachts, FLIBS 2013
This illustrated map was commissioned by Burgess Yachts for their participation in the 2013 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The project highlights the distinct advantages of customized cartography as a dedicated communication and marketing tool for a leading exhibitor at a major international event.
To ensure geographic accuracy and consistency with the official event layout, the map is derived from the same foundational three dimensional digital model I created for the official show management map. As with all derivative projects for third party clients, I work with full transparency and secure prior authorization from Show Management. This practice is a standard part of my process, safeguarding intellectual property and ensuring there is no conflict of interest.
Design Philosophy: Precision and Immediate Readability
Designed for integration into client flyers and onsite signage, this map employs a clean, information first approach. It intentionally avoids a separate symbolic key or icon system. Instead, all pertinent information is placed directly on the illustration. A concise legend explains necessary abbreviations, while directional arrows and clear text labels identify each point of interest directly. This integrated design offers immediate context, allowing a viewer to understand the layout without shifting attention between the map and a separate legend.
The map clearly identifies Burgess Yachts' primary exhibition space and pinpoints the exact locations of their vessels on display. An inset map provides essential geographical context, illustrating how this specific area connects to the broader boat show layout, which aids significantly in client orientation before and during the event. This map also features a second inset map showing yachts on display at another venue.
Strategic Utility as a Pre Event Marketing Asset
This map exemplifies the strategic use of an illustrated map for pre event engagement. While many promotional materials for upcoming events rely on generic aspirational imagery, Burgess Yachts provided clients with concrete, actionable information in a visually polished format. This approach prioritizes practical utility over vague allure, enabling clients and prospects to plan their visit with precision. By clearly illustrating where to find their team and yachts, the map fostered anticipation through clarity, establishing a tone of professionalism and meticulous preparation well before the show began.
This project demonstrates how a thoughtfully designed, permission based map can effectively amplify a brand's presence, streamline client communication, and deliver substantial practical value as part of an exhibitor's integrated marketing strategy.
