This video shows a condensed period of time creating an illustrated map for a boat show using 3D software to achieve an architectural look and feel.
Project Overview: The Foundation of a Mapping Legacy
This video captures a pivotal moment in my cartographic work for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show: the creation of the original three dimensional digital model for the Bahia Mar, International Swimming Hall of Fame, and Las Olas Marina venue in 2013. This project marked a significant technological evolution, transitioning from static vector based illustrations to a dynamic and enduring digital asset.
The Shift from Static to Dynamic Mapping
Previous editions of the show map were crafted as axonometric vector illustrations. While these provided perfect resolution at any scale, they were inherently limited to a single, fixed perspective. The development of this three dimensional model fundamentally changed my capabilities. It allowed for rendering at any magnification and from any angle, providing unprecedented flexibility. When combined with precise real world measurements and the inherent ability to update the geometry as the physical venues evolved, the initial investment in building this model proved to be invaluable. Remarkably, this same core model remains in use today, continually modified and updated, forming the accurate geographic foundation for maps over a decade later.
A Tool Independent of Style
One unforeseen advantage of this approach has been the model’s resilience against changing design trends. In 2013, the mere possession of a 3D model felt futuristic, and the prevailing aesthetic favored busier, more colorful graphics. As visual trends have shifted towards cleaner, more minimalist layouts, the model itself has remained perfectly relevant. This is because the model is fundamentally a repository of accurate content, not a statement of style. The style is applied afterward through rendering techniques and graphic treatment.
This separation of content from presentation is its greatest strength. The model serves as a versatile resource that can be rendered using different software, adjusted with color grading, and stylistically framed within modern page layout programs. It is a timeless tool that produces an unlimited number of illustrated map variations from any perspective, perfectly suited for recurring events, projects requiring multiple views of a single location, or venues planning for future growth.
The Enduring Value of Illustrated Cartography
Intuitive Comprehension
Illustrated maps offer an intuitive clarity that conventional diagrammatic maps often lack. The artistic rendering makes immediate visual distinctions between land and water, different surface materials, and structural boundaries. This intuitive understanding benefits all users; those who prefer traditional diagrams will find it equally clear, while others will find it more accessible and engaging.
A Tool That Transcends Time
Perhaps the most powerful application of this methodology is the ability to visualize what does not yet fully exist. For events or facilities still in the planning or construction phases, an illustrated map generated from a accurate model can transcend time. It moves beyond generic stock photography to provide a marketing tool that is both aspirational and genuinely informative, allowing audiences to understand and anticipate the experience well in advance.
This 2013 project was not just about creating a map for a single year. It was about building a lasting, adaptable, and precise visual infrastructure. It demonstrates my foundational belief that the best event cartography combines enduring accuracy with contemporary design, serving both practical navigation and strategic communication.
