FLIBS Custom Map

Custom Map for Burgess Yachts, FLIBS 2014

This illustrated map was commissioned by Burgess Yachts for their participation in the 2014 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Continuing our collaboration, this project further demonstrates the value of bespoke cartography as a dedicated communication and marketing tool for a premier exhibitor navigating a large scale international event.

To guarantee geographic precision and seamless alignment with the official event layout, the map is rendered from the same foundational three dimensional digital model I maintain Show Management. As with all similar projects for third party clients, I work with complete transparency and obtain prior authorization from Show Management. This established practice is a fundamental part of my workflow, ensuring proper respect for intellectual property and eliminating any potential conflict of interest.

Design Approach: Integrated Information for Efficient Communication

Created for use in client communications and onsite signage, this map continues the clean, information first philosophy established in previous years. It deliberately forgoes a separate symbolic key, integrating all necessary information directly onto the illustration itself. Directional arrows and clear text labels identify each relevant point of interest, providing immediate context. This method allows a viewer to comprehend the layout intuitively without cross referencing a separate legend.

The map distinctly highlights Burgess Yachts' primary exhibition booth and precisely marks the locations of their vessels on display. A significant feature of this year's edition is the inclusion of a secondary inset map. This addition provides a consolidated view of Burgess yachts located at two other key venues within the broader show, offering clients a more comprehensive overview of their entire display footprint.

Strategic Role as a Pre-Event Engagement Tool

This map serves as a clear example of using illustrated cartography for strategic pre event communication. At a stage where promotional materials often depend on generic lifestyle imagery, Burgess Yachts instead provided clients with concrete, actionable information presented in a refined visual format. This approach favors practical utility, enabling prospective clients to efficiently plan their visit and locate specific assets. By clearly illustrating where to find their team and their showcased yachts across multiple locations, the map built anticipation through transparency and reinforced a tone of organized professionalism long before the event commenced.

This project underscores how a carefully crafted, authorized map can effectively enhance a brand's presence, facilitate clearer client communication, and deliver tangible value as a component of an exhibitor's comprehensive marketing strategy.
